Safeguarding

Selby CoderDojo is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all young people who participate in our coding and digital making activities. This page contains important information about how we keep young people safe.

Key policies, safeguarding guidelines and code of conduct

Here are some of the important documents and information we use to help guide what we do in the Dojo.

  • We have a safeguarding policy developed based on guidance from NSPCC.
  • We have a number of other important policies you can find on our governance page.
  • We have developed a code of conduct that we expect everyone in the Dojo to follow, both adults and young people.
  • We have a specific code of conduct for our mentors, written by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
  • We follow the Raspberry Pi Foundations guidance on how to deal with safeguarding concerns.
  • We will ensure all of our mentors have completed safeguarding training.
  • We will DBS check our mentors where legislation allows.
  • Where we are not allowed to DBS check a volunteer, they will not have unsupervised access to young people.

Practical matters

Here are some practical things to bear in mind before coming to the Dojo:

  • Please feel free to bring a drink in a bottle to minimise the risk of spillage, and we just ask you to be careful with drinks around the electronics. It's ok if you spill, just let us know so we can clear it up quickly!
  • Please read the code of conduct that we expect everyone in the Dojo to follow, both adults and young people.
  • Our usual monthly sessions are free, but they aren't a free ride! We may ask parents and carers to help with putting tables and chairs away, or other setup / close down tasks in the Dojo.

  • Ages and additional needs on our monthly sunday sessions:
    • Please remember that if your young person is under 13 years old you must stay with them.
    • If your young person is over 13 but may need extra support, we might need you to stay with them also.
    • When you arrive, you’ll be asked to sign in, and sign out at the end of the session.
    • If your young person is over 13 and you are leaving them, please come into the building to collect them and sign out at the end of the session so we know they’ve left with an appropriate adult.
    • If you’ve told us your young person has any additional needs, it would be great if you could let us know what we can do to ensure they have the best experience possible and we are as inclusive as we can be. Please email info@selbycoderdojo.org.uk
    • We are an entirely volunteer team. We'll do our very best to include everyone, but we reserve the right to refuse bookings if we don't feel we can provide the support an individual young person requires.

  • Ages and additional needs on FEAST school holiday sessions:
    • When you arrive, you’ll be asked to sign your child in, and sign out at the end of the session.
    • Please come into the building to collect them and sign out at the end of the session so we know they’ve left with an appropriate adult.
    • If you’ve told us your young person has any additional needs, we'll contact you so we know what we can do to ensure they have the best experience possible and we are as inclusive as we can be. Please email info@selbycoderdojo.org.uk
    • Depending on the support your young person needs, we may ask you to stay with your young person so that we can provide everyone with the best experience possible.
    • We are an entirely volunteer team. We'll do our very best to include everyone, but we reserve the right to refuse bookings if we don't feel we can provide the support an individual young person requires.

Photos of our activities and young people

Photos (and videos) are a great way to show what we do in the Dojo, but we know people have different views on the safest way to use them. Here we explain our approach. Any reference to photo and image includes the use of video imagery.

  • We have a photo and image sharing policy developed based on guidance from NSPCC.
  • Sharing images of children can carry serious risks, including the loss of privacy, unwanted attention, digital footprint concerns, potential identification or tracking, misuse of images, issues around consent, and the risk of bullying.
  • If you want to take a picture of your own child taking part you are welcome to do so, but please ensure no one else is in the shot.
  • We reccomend you check the sharing settings on your social media accounts before sharing photos of your own family members. This guide from the National Cyber Security Centre may be helpful.
  • We use photos of young people and our activites primarily to help promote the Dojo on social media, printed posters and flyers, and in funder reports.
  • We will not publish full names with any photos. Where we use first names we will jumble the order so young people can't be identified.
  • We ask on our booking form whether parents are happy for us to take and use photos of participants.
  • Parents and young people can withdraw permission by emailing info@selbycoderdojo.org.uk.
  • We will do everything we can to comply with these requests, but it will not be possible to delete images that have already been shared or published.
  • Photos of people taking part in our activities will be stored in our private cloud storage platform (Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive).
  • Access to photo storage will be limited to authorised Selby CoderDojo volunteers and Raspberry Pi Foundation staff only.
  • Photos will be stored indefinitely, unless permission to retain them is withdrawn.
  • Wherever possible, Dojo photos will be taken using Dojo equipment, not personal devices.
  • You can report the abuse or misuse of images of children taken in the Dojo to any of our volunteers, by email to info@selbycoderdojo.org.uk or to the agencies listed below .
